Peterson Wins 2017 Thesis Award of Excellence

Alyssa Peterson has been awarded the 2017 Thesis Award of Excellence in the College of Arts and Humanities for her MA thesis “‘We live in the midst of death’: Medical theory, public health, and the 1793 Yellow Fever epidemic” done under the supervision of Dr. Charles R. Foy.

Contrary to what many American historians have asserted, Alyssa has been able to demonstrate that rather than theoretical approaches, such as those favored by the famous Dr. Benjamin Rush, it was empirical approaches to the 1793 yellow fever epidemic that began to frame public health enforcement in North America. Thus, not only does Alyssa’s thesis place the yellow fever epidemic within a larger Atlantic context, but she has effectively demonstrated its importance in shaping late 18th and early 19th century governmental approaches to public health.
